The Stranger in My Mirror

You wake up one Tuesday and you are extremely good at a life you do not recognise.

The Competence

That is the part nobody warns you about. It is not failure that does it. Failure is loud, and people notice, and someone eventually asks if you are all right.

It is competence. It is being good at the job, and being liked at the dinner, and knowing which fork, and answering the question the way the question wanted to be answered. It is twelve years of small correct choices, each one sensible on its own, arriving one morning as a stranger in a good coat.

You look at him in the bathroom mirror and you think: everyone recognises you.

The Inventory

He knew what he was supposed to want. He could list it. He had, in fact, listed it, at twenty-three, on the back of a receipt, and had achieved most of it by thirty-five, which ought to have been the end of the story.

The list was not wrong. That was the difficulty. Every item on it was a thing a reasonable person might want. It was only when you had all of them at once, in the same house, that you noticed none of them had been chosen. They had been agreed to.

There is a difference between the life you built and the life you did not object to.

Starting

He did not blow it up. This is not that kind of story, and those stories are mostly lies anyway.

What he did was smaller and took much longer. He began saying no to one thing a month. Small things. A meeting. A weekend. A version of himself that turned up automatically when certain people were in the room.

It took two years before the man in the mirror did anything unexpected. Then one morning he laughed at something, genuinely, at seven in the morning, alone, and it was a laugh he had not heard since he was nineteen.

He is still mostly the stranger. But they have been introduced now, and they are working on it.
